Democratic Memory

Barcelona City Council has been promoting this series, which takes place around 14 April with the collaboration of countless organisations in the city, since 2016. The date reminds us that the tradition of republicanism has always been very much alive in Barcelona city too, covering the whole spectrum of political leanings from liberal to conservative to democratic.

The tradition of democratic republicanism has traditionally been linked to certain principles, such as extending suffrage, promoting education, controlling political and economic powers and active citizen involvement in the construction of a shared existence.

Bringing the republican tradition up to date is now a must, linking it to the 21st century’s challenges and movements for change: feminism, LGBTI movements, social rights defence and digital rights movements, and anti-racism and environmental movements. This is the goal of this 4^th edition of the Republican Spring.
