Built on what had been the vegetable garden of the rectory of Sant Vicenç de Sarrià, it is a project of the architects M. Coquillat and A. Calvet.

In 1900 the first project to build a covered market in Sarrià appeared, which was unsuccessful. It was not until 1909, with the opening of the Paseo de la Reina Elisenda to Pedralbes, that construction began.

The opening of this road separated the parish of Sant Vicenç de Sarrià from the orchard of the rectory, where the current market was built after in 1910 the architects M. Coquillat and A. Calvet presented the final market project, inaugurated at the end of 1911. In 2007 the modernisation of the market was carried out, by G56, which allowed the incorporation of new services and infrastructures, as well as new stalls that have workshops and tasting spaces.

Architecture

It has two façades: the first, taller, made of brickwork and pyramidal in shape, with the lower part plastered with stone. In the central part there are twenty-two rectangular stained glass windows that constitute an important entrance of natural light and, in the upper part, seven large decorative pillars stand out. The second façade, also made of brickwork, like the whole nave, has a series of iron panels with narrow openings that allow air to pass through and facilitate market ventilation. At the top stand out ten decorative pillars.

The modernisation works carried out included the rehabilitation of the façade and roof, the construction of new storerooms, the incorporation of new recycling and reuse services for rubbish, the adaptation of the accesses to people with reduced mobility and the construction of a new entrance lobby.
