The total cost of the work, carried out between 2024 and 2025, was over two million euros. It formed part of the Comprehensive Maintenance Plan (PMI) from the Pla Endreça.

More than eleven million euros will be invested in the renovation of children’s play areas all over the city as part of these plans.

Besides changing play elements, paving and furniture has also been renewed and spaces organised to be able to separate peaceful play areas and dynamic ones. Other improvements include the installation of new shaded areas as part of the municipal programme to adapt public space to climate conditions and improve temperatures in different part of the city.

Accessibility was a key criterion in the process, with all projects embracing it to offer play possibilities for children with disabilities or functional diversity and differing degrees of challenges and motivation.

The consolidation of the new model for children’s play areas in the city is part of the plan on play in public spaces for the period up to 2030, the idea being to move from a city with play areas to a city which is also adapted to their needs, where play and physical activity are naturally presents and accessible in public spaces. The aim is for greener spaces with more shade, attractive play elements and more space for free play, plus good quality comfortable spaces to spend time in. In short, better quality play areas that are inclusive and which adapt to people’s real needs. These improvements also help to optimise management and maintenance.

The process thus continues for a more play-friendly city. Clearly backing the improvement and diversification of opportunities for play and physical activity in public space, given its benefits in the development and well-being of children and teenagers and for community health and living. Going into 2026, projects to improve another 24 play areas are now being tendered, with work to begin at the start of the year.
