Updating and improving Túnel de la Rovira

The works to update the Túnel de la Rovira, the 1,300 m tunnel that has connected Baix Guinardó with El Carmel since 1987, are already under way. The works will improve safety and energy efficiency, resurface the road, fix structural defects, optimise waterproofing and drainage, and upgrade most of the equipment in the tunnel.

Greater safety

One of the main tasks consists of improving safety in the tunnel by excavating three new evacuation routes, connected across both sides of the tunnel, i.e. the northbound and southbound directions. The safety and communications equipment will also be upgraded with new technological solutions, and new fire detection elements will be incorporated. At the same time, the fire hydrant and fire extinguisher system will be expanded, and the technical rooms renovated.

Tunnel updating

The works include the complete replacement of the road surface and tunnel lighting system, which will use LED technology, and new automated ventilation guidelines adapted to the various scenarios. The improvement works will also fix water leaks and revamp the drainage system.

Phases and impacts of the works

STAGE 1. Preliminary works (December 2024 - March 2025):

During the first three months of the works, the tunnel has been closed to traffic at night from Sunday to Thursday, from 10.30 pm to 5.30 am.

UPDATE: STAGE 2. Work in the descending tunnel (23 March - October 2025):

This new phase of the works will require the complete closure of the southbound tunnel towards the city centre for a period of four months. Construction workers will be working 24 hours a day in different shifts with the aim of completing these works in the shortest possible time, and reducing disruption to members of the public. Although it was initially announced that this stage of the work would conclude in August, this timetable has had to be extended until October for technical reasons. The roll-out of the work has also been reconfigured to maintain the current mobility (daytime restrictions on the ascending side) until the completion of the tunnel renovation works.

Alternative routes
  • From exit 3 on the Ronda de Dalt ring road towards Llobregat or exit 4 towards Besòs:  the recommended route begins at Plaça de Karl Marx, and continues along Passeig de Valldaura to Plaça de la República. From there, it continues along Passeig de Verdum, connecting with Carrer del Doctor Pi i Molist, Avinguda dels Quinze, Passeig de Maragall and takes you to the Ronda del Guinardó ring road.
  • From exit 6 on the Ronda de Dalt ring road in both directions: traffic will be diverted along either Avinguda de la República Argentina or Carrer d’Esteve Terrades, and link up with Avinguda de Vallcarca.
  • For traffic coming from Avinguda de l'Estatut: you need to head down Carrer de Lisboa, Carrer de Tajo (on all three, a second downhill lane will be set up) and Passeig de Maragall until you get to Carrer de Sant Antoni Maria Claret.

Disruption to TMB bus services
  • Line V21: two bus-stops cancelled in Rambla del Carmel and four provisional stops: two in Carrer de Dante, one in Passeig de Maragall with Ronda del Guinardó, and another in Ronda del Guinardó. At the exit from the tunnel, the bus resumes its usual route. The line will run extra buses to ensure the frequency of the service is maintained, particularly during rush hour.
  • Line 102: the current start and end stop will be closed and moved a few metres further along to Passeig de Maragall.
  • Line 112: the start and end stop will be moved to Carrer de Porto and the bus will not use the stop in Carrer de Lisboa, between Carrer de Porto and Avinguda de l'Estatut de Catalunya (line 185 will use this stop normally).
Night-time closure of the northbound tunnel

The complete closure of the southbound tunnel towards the city centre will coincide with the night-time closure of the northbound tunnel (on Sunday to Thursday nights from 10.30 pm to 5.30 am).

STAGE 3. Work on the ascending tunnel. Travel in the direction of the mountains is maintained (November 2025 - January 2026):

Work will move to the ascending side from November 2025 and continue until January 2026. Even so, mobility will remain unchanged: traffic will still be able to use the ascending tunnel with no restrictions during the daytime, although during this stage cars and motorcycles will exceptionally use the descending tunnel to head in the direction of the mountains.

STAGE 4. Final work (February 2026):

During this final month of work, traffic travelling in the direction of the mountains will again be able to use the ascending tunnel, which will be fully operative. Work will move to the descending tunnel, with the final tasks to leave it ready for the final reopening.
