Information

In 1985 the twinning between Barcelona and Montevideo was formalized, initiating the relationship with the capital of Uruguay that has been maintained until now thanks to the strong harmony between the diverse municipal corporations.  Apart from the different common projects, as for example the reform of the archive, the improvement work of the administration, or the recuperation of the marginal neighbourhoods such as Malvín Norte, Montevideo has always been a city allied to Barcelona above all in spaces such as the UCCI (Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities).

In April 2018, the mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, signed a bilateral cooperation protocol in Montevideo focused on exchanges on issues such us urban planning and housing, inclusion policies, gender equality and LGTBI, mobility and economic development.

Montevideo is member of the CIDEU (Latin American Centre for Strategic Urban Development) and permanent headquarters of the Secretariat of Mercociudades.
