In 1985 Barcelona was twinned with São Paulo and since 1990, when the cooperation agreement was updated, Barcelona and São Paulo have collaborated in topics of urban services and technologies, territorial system of information, organisation of the municipal administration, urban rehabilitation (historic centre), citizen information and promotion of SMEs.

Furthermore, a team from Barcelona elaborated a proposal of a Municipal Charter for São Paulo in 1992.

Currently, São Paulo has become a top level commercial power, which has led to more exchanges in terms of business and investment possibilities between the two cities.

São Paulo is member of the CIDEU (Latin American Centre for Strategic Urban Development) and also of the UCCI (Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities).
