In 1983 a twinning agreement was signed between Boston and Barcelona, the first agreement with a North American city.

Over the years, there have been numerous exchanges between Boston and Barcelona, such as the regular participation of Barcelona Activa in the Biotechnology Trade Fair organised there; the carrying out of technological and innovation missions focused on new technology and biotechnology companies, and cultural exchanges.

Also, it should be highlighted the collaboration with the MIT for the introduction in Barcelona of the Fablabs.  The Fablabs, or Laboratories of Fabrication, are a global network of local laboratories that foster creativity by providing individuals with digital fabrication tools.

In March 2017, on the ocassion of an official trip to Boston, relations and exchanges with this city were resumed, especially in the fields of housing and economic development, technological innovation, mobility and the fight against pollution.
