Barcelona and San Francisco signed a twinning agreement in June 2010, initially focused on a series of areas of work, which go from civil rights and culture, to mobility, smart cities, new technologies and economic development.

In 2013 a ratification of the agreement was signed, including strategic fields such as the smart cities, the achievement of a direct flight to join the two cities, the organisation of economic missions, cultural promotion, tourism and sustainable mobility.

Since then, diverse technical exchanges have taken place and several delegations from San Francisco have participated in different editions of the Smart City Expo World Congress of Barcelona.
