A new library for the city, the Gabriel García Márquez

It will be in the Sant Martí district and its specialization will be Latin American literature.

The Gabriel García Márquez Library, located at 219 Carrer del Treball, in the Sant Martí district, will open its doors on Saturday the 28th of May. It will be the third largest library in the Barcelona Library network and will employ 15 people under the management of Neus Castellano. The library, designed by architects Elena Orte and Guillermo Sevillano (Suma Arquitectura), will have a collection of approximately 40,000 documents, 140 reading points and 30 Internet access points. In addition, there will be different spaces for activities, including a sensory space, as well as others for meetings and group work. It will also have a radio studio.

On the opening day, the library will be open from 10 am to 2 pm and from 4 pm to 8 pm. There will be a recording of a radio magazine throughout the day, in collaboration with the XRCB (Barcelona Community Radio Network). The resulting podcasts can be listened to later on at the XRCB website: https://xrcb.cat/en/. Neighbourhood organizations and associations will organise various events. At 11 am, prior to the visit and parliaments of the authorities, Pep Callau i Els Pepsicolen will perform a family show. The opening day will end at 7 pm with a vertical dance production, entitled Las voladoras, by Les Filles d’Eva.

The library, named after Nobel Prize in Literature Gabriel García Márquez, will specialize in Latin American literature and will cover the major works of Latin American narrators, poets, and playwrights, both classical and contemporary. Beyond the bibliographic collection, the facility aspires to become a centre of irradiation of Latin American culture through dissemination and promotion activities organized under the auspices of the close relationship that the Barcelona Library network maintains with Casa America Catalunya. It will also have a space dedicated to the comic artist Francisco Ibáñez, a neighbour of the Sant Martí district.
