The multifaceted work of one of the first multimedia artists, the Swiss artist Meret Oppenheim, uses ingenious ironic games to question the modern pictorial and literary tradition. This is shown in her iconoclastic works, starting in 1936 with the famous fur-covered cup, Le déjeurner en fourrure. But in addition to being an icon of the surrealist movement, she was also a combative feminist precursor who investigated the role of women in patriarchal society in both her art and her poetry.

In conversation with the poet Olvido García Valdés, the translator Cecilia Dreymüller will explore the "strange continent" of Oppenheim’s dream world, revealed in poems that extend into paintings and paintings that extend into poems. The event will close with a reading of some of the texts.

Olvido García Valdés (Santianes de Pravia, 1950), a poet and essayist. She was General Director of Books and Reading Promotion under the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sport. Her essays include a biography of Teresa de Jesús (Omega, 2001). Her interest in painting is shown in essays on Velázquez, Anselm Kiefer, Antonio Tàpies and Vicente Rojo. Her poetry was published in Esa polilla que delante de mí revolotea (Galaxia Gutenberg, 2008). She received the 2007 National Poetry Prize for Y todos estábamos vivos. Her most recent poetic work is Lo solo del animal (Tusquets, 2012). Her poetry has been translated into English, French, German, Italian, Swedish and Polish.

Cecilia Dreymüller (Nohn, Germany, 1962), a literary critic, translator and editor specialized in Central European and German literature. She is a regular contributor to El País. Her works include the essay Confluencias. Panorama crítico de la narrativa en lengua alemana después de 1945 (Galaxia Gutenberg, 2008) and her most recent publication Peter Handke y España (Alianza, 2017). She has translated Ingeborg Bachmann, Peter Handke and Marcel Beyer. She is the founder of the Tresmolins publishing house.
