Joan Martí, fotògraf. Belleses del XIX
In 1874, the photographer Joan Martí brought together a series of photographs entitled Bellezas de Barcelona, in order to give a broad, innovative view of the city. By way of a documentary, he compiled images of sites that were shortly to change and presented this material in album format, thus creating a product that was useful even as a souvenir for travellers. In carrying out the project, which was based on fifty or so photographs, he took different shots of the same places so that the resulting albums varied slightly yet featured the same index.
The exhibition is intended to show all the facets of the work of a photographer in Barcelona in the mid-nineteenth century, when the technique of portraiture was a basic requirement for artistic survival. It places particular emphasis on the significance of the production of the first album, which provided an open view of the city: a city that grew beyond its walls, in which historical sites were presented in the same light as new urban thoroughfares.
