Barcelona’s Photographic Archive presents the exhibition “The city in front of the camera. Urban imaginaries in the 19th century”. The arrival of photography in Barcelona in 1839 coincided with an intense process of urban transformation of the city. From that moment on, photography took part: it promoted motives and points of view that would gradually settle the discourse on the new urban reality of the 19th century.
However, the city is not the only thing that has been transformed, so has photography itself: embracing the tradition of the arts and incorporating the new visual resources of the camera and other technologies of the 19th century.
