New officers join Barcelona's Guàrdia Urbana
Barcelona's Guàrdia Urbana has welcomed 96 new officers from the 97th class, who have successfully completed their training at the Catalan Institute of Public Security. These officers will now begin their practical training as part of the summer deployment, which began in June to ensure mobility, positive community life, civic behaviour and security in public spaces during peak periods.
The cohort, consisting of 22 women and 74 men, will begin their practical experience in various territorial units of the police force under the guidance of experienced officers. After one year’s service, they will be appointed as career civil servants and assigned to community-focused roles to enhance their interaction and connection with the public.
In September, new candidates for 128 additional posts will begin training at the Catalan Institute of Public Security, with plans for deployment by summer 2025.
With these latest additions, the Guàrdia Urbana will reach an all-time high of more than 3,500 officers. This reinforcement will facilitate the creation of new night units, similar to those already operating in the districts of Sant Martí, Sants-Montjuïc, Ciutat Vella and Eixample.
