Exhibition: "40 years of democratic city councils"

The new street gazetteer

The new, democratic Barcelona also had to make itself seen at street level, and a vital step for these new times was changing the street gazetteer. The adoption of Spanish and imposition of references alien to the memory and tradition of most local residents under Francoism gave way to the use of Catalan and recovery of the popular names of streets and squares.

At the proposal of the Gràcia District Municipal Council, approval was given to change the names of emblematic streets such as Gran de Gràcia, no longer Mayor de Gracia, or Plaça del Raspall, which back then was called Plaza de Santa Joaquina de Vedruna. Other streets that would change their name were Inmaculado Corazón de María, which became Carrer del Lliri, and Paseo del General Mola, now Passeig de Sant Joan.
