Historiographical tradition has regarded the Universal Exposition of 1888 as one of the most important chapters in the genesis of photography in Barcelona. The present work offers another approach to this event and the impact it had on the field of photography, by interpreting it as an ambivalent stage between the establishment of previous visual systems, close to other disciplines such as painting or etching, and the emergence of new practices, such as photojournalism, that would come of age at the start of the 20th century.
