The space where Plaça Reial stands today was the site of an old convent, where there had formerly been a mediaeval brothel, and over time it became the place where the upper crust went for a late supper after coming out of the Liceu opera house. It was also the meeting place for sardana dancers and trippers, a lively and popular square before the Civil War, an empty and dirty spot in the postwar, the night-life epicentre in the 1950s and 1960s, an entry point for drugs in the 1970s and 1980s, a showcase for the socialist Administration in the 1990s and one of the best known and most photographed corners by tourists. Rarely can one set foot in a setting with so much history that is still so alive, an iconic place that should be rediscovered by everyone from Barcelona.
