El Rebombori del Pa. Barcelona 1789

“Y quien empesso toda la bulla fueron las mugeres”

Author/s
Isabel Segura Soriano

This is the first time a book has been published about one of the least known revolts in Barcelona's history, one detonated by the price of bread and started by women.

In 1789, a municipal proclamation announcing a rise in the price of bread sparked a revolt in Barcelona that disrupted life in the city for three days and ended in brutal repression.

Many people were injured, imprisoned and exiled, and a six, including Josefa Vilaret, were hung. Because, according to the chronicles of the time, women played a big part in the protest. “And it was the women who started all the fuss”, wrote Ramon Cornet.

The authorities adopted stern measures to control the populace but they also agreed to lower the price of bread. The revolt later spread to other towns in Catalonia, occurring at the same time as the French Revolution.

This book brings to light one of the least known episodes in Barcelona’s history and asserts the leading role women have played in the social construction of the city.
