A novel set in Barcelona at the turn of the 19th century in the wake of the War of Succession. The premature death of the father of the family leads to the hasty marriage of the eldest daughter, Carme, to Francesc Castany, a mysterious young man who should have become the new boss of the family’s textile factory. But when he leaves her to pursue a dream, Carme finds herself forced out of the role of the self-sacrificing wife that was expected by society at the time and into another entirely different: that of running the family business.
