It was midnight on 22 January 1939 when poet, writer and intellectual Antonio Machado began his journey into exile. Barcelona was the last city he resided in before his exile in Collioure, France, from which he never returned. During the nine months he was in Barcelona, amidst the Spanish Civil War, he was a regular contributor to the newspaper La Vanguardia. This book brings together all 29 articles back-to-back for the very first time, most of them from the “Desde el mirador de la guerra” [From the viewpoint of war] series. The poet, who was in a delicate state of health, lived discreetly between the Hotel Majestic and a villa in Sant Gervasi. In these articles, he criticised the attitude of the European powers towards the Spanish Civil War. This book was published to celebrate Barcelona’s membership in the Network of Machadian Cities, a group of cities in which the poet lived.
