EXTENDING PROTECTION
INCREASING THE PROTECTION OF BUILDINGS WITH HERITAGE VALUE
Barcelona is improving its control over demolitions, preventing the loss of buildings with heritage value. From now on, no building can be pulled down unless a permit has been obtained and a historical-memory report submitted, so that an assessment can be made regarding whether or not it has any type of heritage value. If the building is deemed significant, the City Council can have it listed, and reject the permit application.
GRASSROOTS PARTICIPATION
A ‘Citizen’s Heritage Board’ has been created, a meeting point for city residents and experts that provides a space for dialogue with local residents and professionals about our city’s heritage, and the shaping of a new concept of heritage that takes account of values linked to the everyday life of local neighbourhoods, and the fight against climate change.
