How do you get to local shops and businesses? Nine out of ten people in Barcelona go on foot.
Walking is the most popular means of getting around to go shopping, particularly when it comes to regular products. People opt to go on foot when shopping for food (91.5% of cases), fresh produce (91.2%) and other everyday products (90.1%). Other means of getting around account for very few cases. These are the main figures from the Barcelona Municipal Omnibus Survey for commerce, which asked people in Barcelona how they get around to purchase the products they need.
For all other shopping, the less usual things, while most people also go on foot, other means of mobility are also used. For instance, 50.6% of people go on foot when they go to buy clothes and footwear, while 27.5% use public transport (mainly the metro, accounting for 16.4%). For homewear, most people also go on foot (40.5%), with 19% using public transport and 15.3% using private transport. For cultural and leisure products, 57.3% of people go on foot, while 11.1% use public transport. For cultural and leisure products, 34.2% of people go on foot, while 18.6% use public transport.
The use of public transport is lower when it comes to buyingcultural and leisure products and clothing and footwear (3.8% and 3.5% respectively) compared to December 2022. Full data can be found in detail at the Barcelona Observatory for Commerce and Restaurants.
