16 May: Romani Resistance Day

Commemoration. Ricard Valentí, the first vice chair of the Municipal Council of Roma People, talks about Romani Resistance Day.

Romani Resistance Day, on 16 May, remembers the night in 1944 when gypsies imprisoned in the Romani section at Auschwitz-Birkenau confronted the SS to avoid being executed and exterminated by gas.

The commemoration of this day seeks to “draw attention to the struggle and resistance of the Romani people in the situations of injustice, inequality and vulnerability they have suffered and still suffer, and to stand up for their rights and the struggle against anti-gypsy discrimination”.

Ricard Valentí, the first vice chair of the Municipal Council of Roma People, explains in this video.
