5 November. World Day of Romani Language

This day is intended to make the the Romani language more widely known.

To commemorate this occasion, the Barcelona Municipal Council of Romani People and Barcelona City Council remember the importance of conserving the Romani language and its dialectal wealth, the cultural heritage of the Romani people and the linguistic heritage of humanity.

Romani čhib is an Indo-European language that traces its origins to Sanskrit. It is currently believed that around 14 million people speak the language across the five continents.

Seo Cizmich, Director of Romanó Kher, a Romania cultural and memorial space, honorary ambassador of Romaní čhib from the Kali Sara in Croatia and member of the Barcelona Municipal Council of Romani People, discusses the process of recovering this language in the accompanying video.
