Institutional declaration in commemoration of the Roma people’s arrival in Catalonia

An institutional declaration acknowledges that the city’s history and culture cannot be conceived without taking into account the Roma people’s contribution.

Expressing the city of Barcelona’s commitment in the fight against anti-Roma prejudice and all other existing forms of racism and discrimination.

The City Council acknowledges the work carried out by the entities forming part of the Municipal Council for Roma People in the fight to reduce inequalities and promote the Roma culture in our city. Finally, the declaration also emphasises the importance of commemorating this date, 26 November 1415, to highlight the fact that our history and culture cannot be conceived without the Roma people’s contribution. 

Barcelona City Council’s Municipal Council of Roma People, in its capacity as the body that monitors and helps create social and cultural anti-discrimination policies and policies for the recognition of the Roma people, is urging the local and regional governments to continue carrying out those actions that promote the fight against social and institutional anti-Roma prejudice.  

And, as regards the diffusion and promotion of the Roma culture, the council is going to launch a task force to discuss and assess the various significant dates in the history of the Roma people.
