Lab de Labs

Lab de Labs is a collaborative research and practice project focused on artistic, cultural, and community mediation at Barcelona’s Fàbriques de Creació. It was launched in 2023 to support the “Territory(s), Community(s), and Artistic Practices” project as a shared space for experimentation — a place to collectively reflect on and redefine what mediation can do today, through a Community of Practice made up of artists, cultural workers, and technicians. With a methodology grounded in horizontal exchange and situated knowledge, Lab de Labs connects experiences, sparks reflection, and proposes tools to strengthen the practice and its impact on cultural policies.

Lab de Labs is a methodological device designed and facilitated by researcher Caro Novella — a specialist in practice-based research — that brings together a Community of Practice around cultural and artistic mediation. Driven by the Fàbriques de Creació network, it promotes shared exploration, exchange of experiences, and collective reflection. Its approach is generative, open, and situated: it values the diversity of practices within the network and opens up questions about how to work with communities through art.

At the heart of Lab de Labs is its Community of Practice, formed by professionals from the different creative factories. It’s not a closed working group, but a living space for sharing knowledge, challenges, and methodologies. Collective practice and mutual support are central pillars for advancing together and influencing the structures of the network.

Each yearly edition is structured in two phases: a first phase of listening and identifying key topics, and a second phase of in-person labs across various factories. Sessions combine experimental methodologies and creative tools to open questions, activate practice, and make visible the knowledge that emerges from lived experience. Each gathering features diverse formats such as listening circles, oracular practices, drawing, or movement.
