2019 Carmen Thyssen Museum Arts Education Residency - Malaga

The Education Department of the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga is seeking to boost the presence of Arts Education within the museum sector by offering this open residency to creative people who would like to share their fields of research and subject interests together with their processes and methodologies of creation with a community of participants.

 

It is looking for a creator with the potential to establish a horizontal relationship with the participating collective, open to being influenced by the interests and experiences of the members of this community and adaptable to new lines of thinking in their prior working processes and areas of interest.

Artist-educators, artists, educators and producers or cultural agents in general, from both Spain and overseas, who are developing their projects in any particular discipline.

Conditions

The Carmen Thyssen Museum (MCTM) in Malaga can offer:

  • Temporary contract covering project and work over a two-month period to develop the chosen project. Part-time working day totalling 25 hours per week
  • Gross monthly pay of 1530 euros
  • Work space in the MCTM administrative building available on work days between 8am and 4pm
  • Participation in programme educational activities of interest to the resident artist and which are aimed at collectives or the general public
  • Specialist advice on social art, art education, critical pedagogy and work in communities of learning

 

The Resident Artist’s Obligations:

  • The resident artist must procure their own accommodation
  • The resident artist must organize and cover the costs of their travel arrangements
  • The artist must develop the project for which she or he has been chosen within the two-month residency period
  • The artist’s rights (royalties, copyright) accruable as a result of the project developed during the residency will correspond to Creative Commons. In cases where the beneficiary of the licence is not the artist themselves, this right will only cover non-commercial purposes
  • The selected artist will agree to take part in actions the Museum might consider appropriate for disseminating and promoting the project
  • When the project has finished, the resident creator will prepare a report incorporating a record of steps taken and actions carried out as part of a global evaluation of the experience
  • If the selected artist is neither Spanish nor a national from a European Union member state, their participation in the project will be dependent on obtaining the necessary legal permits for working in Spain

Selection

The Education Department and Arts Management of the Museum will make a preliminary selection of no more than ten candidates from which the short list will be drawn up.

The final choice of resident artist will be determined by a jury of experts comprising:

 

  • Tecla Lumbreras (Vice-Rector of Sport and Culture UMA)
  • Salomón Castiel (Director of La Térmica)
  • Salvador Haro (Dean of the Faculty of BBAA, Malaga)
  • Lourdes Moreno (Artistic Director of MCTM)
  • Elisabeth Aparicio (Head of Education Department MCTM)

Application Submission

To submit an application for the residency, candidates must send the following documentation via email to this account: educacion@carmenthyssenmalaga.org before 5 May 2019, 11:59pm.

 

One document only which must include:

- Brief professional biography (no longer than 1000 characters including spaces) + selection of images (low resolution) of educational, creative, arts and/or arts-educational projects completed.

 

- Project to be developed including the following details and synopses:

  • Title
  • Summary of concept (no longer than 1000 characters, spaces included)
  • Motive for the idea
  • Overall objectives
  • Target audience of proposal
  • Time schedule
  • Estimate of materials, technical media and space requirements

 

Each candidate may submit one project only that should be developed over two phases: research of social context for the fit of the project with the needs of the target community and realisation of the project.

 

The Museum reserves the right to make contact with participants to resolve any doubt about the project and arrange a personal interview via video conference.
