Barcelona City Council calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine

Mayor Ada Colau and the representatives of the municipal groups received the Ukrainian entities of Barcelona.

Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, and the representatives of the municipal groups of the City Council received the Ukrainian entities of Barcelona on February 24 –the one-year anniversary of the invasion– minutes before the start of the February plenary council, where an institutional declaration condemning the Russian invasion in Ukraine was presented.

The declaration denounces Russia’s “brutal violation” of all norms of international law, which “puts all of humanity on the brink of disaster.” The text calls for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory and compliance with international law.

The Mayor of Barcelona visited Kíiv on December 9, 2022 to reinforce the humanitarian and cooperation corridor with the city. On the other hand, on September 24, the two cities signed a collaboration agreement during the visit of Mayor Klichkó to Barcelona, who visited the city during the Mercè festivities since Kíiv will be the guest of La Mercè 2023. In November, the the Mayor of Kíiv returned to Barcelona accompanied by a delegation of two deputy mayors and other municipal managers in order to participate in the Smart City Expo World Congress, to collect the “World Smart City Award Special Recognition” award (awarded for strengthening the resilience and continuity of services to citizens) and hold work meetings with the City Council.

On the occasion of the first anniversary of the war, the Eurocities network published a video with a strong message of support from various mayors and deputy mayors, with the participation of the third deputy mayor, Laia Bonet, representing Barcelona.
