Barcelona strengthens its ties with Mexico thanks to a new direct flight
Barcelona will have a new flight connection with Mexico City from March, operated by Aeroméxico. The new route will offer six flights a week and strengthen “ties between Barcelona and Mexico”, according to the Mayor, Jaume Collboni.
The institutional presentation of the Aeroméxico connection was given at the beginning of the month in Mexico City and attended by the Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, and the President of the Government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa. During the presentation, the Mayor affirmed that “Barcelona needs direct flight connections to favour cultural and commercial exchanges between countries”. He also noted that “the new connection is a nice way of defining this link that we want to strengthen between Europe and Latin America, as at present the bridges are those created by airlines”. Last year saw 156,000 passengers fly between Mexico City and Barcelona on flights operated by other companies.
Given that this is a route with potential for growth, the Mayor insisted that “it’s crucial there are direct connections for cultural and commercial exchanges between our countries to generate opportunities for SMEs and the self-employed; ultimately, to generate wealth”.
A step forward in Barcelona’s international connectivity
The recovery of this route forms part of the three main goals in the Strategic Plan by the Barcelona Air Route Development Committee (CDRA), which are to secure routes that are still not available in strategic destinations with a large demand, to increment frequencies and minimise the seasonal nature of existing routes, and finally, to promote Barcelona as an air transport hub.
The new direct connection is the result of joint work by Aeroméxico and the CDRA, made up of Barcelona City Council, AENA, the Government of Catalonia and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, with the support of strategic organisations such as the Catalan Tourism Agency, ACCIÓ, Turisme and Turespaña.
