Museums and heritage sites celebrate the holidays
Nearly forty cultural venues in Barcelona offer activities for children, families, and adult visitors alike.
If anyone gets bored this Christmas… it’s by choice. Barcelona’s museums and heritage sites are celebrating the season with activities for all ages and interests. Want to decorate your own pocket, learn to create visual Christmas cards, or play archaeologist for a day?
These are just a few examples from a citywide Christmas program packed with engaging activities:
Customized pockets
On Saturdays at 11:00 a.m., DHub hosts guided tours at the Casa Bloc Apartment Museum, while on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. (except 28 December), the family activity Design in Your Pocket invites children to explore the history of fashion and create their own personalized pockets.

Photographic itinerary
On 22 and 30 December, children aged 5–12 can participate in the Visual Christmas Cards workshop at the Barcelona Photographic Archive, learning how to create portraits using different lighting techniques. On 23 and 29 December, the Christmas Landscapes workshop captures the holiday atmosphere of the city and its people through a photographic route using instant cameras.

History of a castle
The A Christmas with a View program offers four sessions introducing children to the history of Montjuïc Castle and the old watchtower. Guided tours and the activity Come Ring the Birds! (21 December) will also take place at the castle this Christmas.

Becoming an archaeonaut
The Museu d’Història de Barcelona invites children aged 6–12 to explore the city’s history through inventions, science, and heritage. Archaeonauts of the City is offered at the El Born and Plaça del Rei venues.

A different Japan
Both locations of the Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món have special holiday activities. At Seu Montcada, children aged 5 and up can participate in Emakimono: Drawing, Origami, and Collage (27 December), inspired by the Aynu exhibition and introducing visitors to one of Japan’s oldest and most unique indigenous cultures from Hokkaido. On 28 December, at Seu Montjuïc, children aged 5+ can take part in Baskets, Plows, and Blades, a workshop highlighting traditional Catalan crafts and offering a hands-on experience with various artisanal techniques.

Lavender soap at Pedralbes
At the Monestir de Pedralbes, a series of workshops and activities allows visitors to learn monastic skills, including a session on 20 December teaching participants how to make lavender-scented soap.

Picasso’s Barcelona
The Museu Picasso offers a workshop on 3 January where families with children aged 6+ can create prints inspired by works in the museum’s collection. Until 27 December, visitors can also follow the Weaving Networks route, exploring Picasso’s Barcelona.

Theater, magic, and visual poetry
At Fundació Joan Miró, a winter workshop for children aged 5–10 is held on 22 and 23 December, designed to spark curiosity and creativity through experimental approaches to contemporary art. On 23 December at 4:00 p.m., the performative action Eclipse combines live music, absurdist theater, magic, and visual poetry. Additional workshops exploring Joan Miró’s creative processes are offered on 28 and 30 December (in Spanish) and 29 December and 4 January (in Catalan) for children aged 6–10.

Steering a ship
At the Museu Marítim de Barcelona, between 22 and 31 December, families with children aged 4–7 can become “Patapumers in Action!” Participants will learn how to steer a ship, identify its parts, tie nautical knots, discover pirates, and keep the seas clean.

Many other museums and heritage sites across the city also offer special activities during the holiday season. Before visiting, check opening hours, as some sites are closed on 25 December and 1 January, and schedules may vary on 24, 26, 31 December, and 5–6 January.
