A coffee with Early Music notes

12.05.2024

The Chambre du Roi has historically been one of the central elements in the design of French royal palaces. Some of the most important ceremonies surrounding the king's daily life took place in La Chambre du Roi. In 17th century France, under the absolutism of Louis XIV, La Chambre du Roi became the focus, both physically and ideologically, of the palace of Versailles.

Louis XIV stood out for having been a great patron of the arts. In the musical field, under the watchful eye of Jean-Baptiste Lully, he brought together at his court many of the most important French musicians of the time, such as François Couperin, Marin Marais, Jacques-Martin Hotteterre, or Michel de La Barre, among others. Jean-Philippe Rameau inherited, after the death of Jean-Baptiste Lully, the position of dominant composer of French opera and many of his operas would premiere at Versailles itself.
