Joan Molet Petit, author of the recently published book Pere Falqués, l’arquitecte municipal de la Barcelona modernista, co-published by Barcelona City Council and the publisher Àmbit, will be giving a lecture at the Museu de Badalona about Falqués’ time in Badalona, as well as other notable aspects of his professional career.

During the lecture, historian Joan Molet will talk about the competitions Falqués won in Barcelona, his participation in the Universal Exposition of 1888, and also his work as a municipal architect in Barcelona from 1889 (the electric lighting on Passeig de Gràcia, the metro tunnels under Via Laietana, markets, museums, monuments, schools and even a frustrated royal palace). He will also talk about the large private commissions he received, such as the house of Baron Bonet, or the Central Catalana d’Electricitat electricity plant. All these works, and some projects that never materialised, are discussed in detail in the book.

Architect of Barcelona, and also Badalona

Pere Falqués i Urpí (1849-1916) is widely recognised for his work as a municipal architect in Barcelona between 1890 and 1916. However, he is less well known for his earlier professional connection to Badalona, where he worked as an architectural consultant from 1878 to 1889. During this period he was involved in some important urban planning projects, such as the opening of Carrer del Temple, various interventions in Casa de la Vila, the construction of the first building of the Arnús Asylum and the design of the first covered market in Badalona: the Mercat Maignon.
