This book takes us through the demographic, economic and urban growth of Barcelona during the 19th century. Using snippets of history, it relates events such as the Peninsular War, the burning of the convents and the bombardment of Barcelona by General Espartero. It also looks at the establishment of the Industrial Revolution, the advent of the steam engine, the metal industry along with the labour disputes that these brought about. Written in the form of short stories, this book also offers an insight into the city’s cultural revival, known as the “Renaixença”, the creation of the Jocs Florals, the construction of the Liceu opera house, Catalan Modernism, the role of the bourgeoisie, and so on. And no account of the nineteenth century would be complete without a reference to the Cerdà plan, which transformed Barcelona from top to bottom with its grid system of streets and which meant that former towns would become city neighbourhoods .
