It’s no surprise that one of the most famous quotes from literature has to do with families. Ever since Tolstoy created the happy/unhappy (each in their own way) family dichotomy, family has become a central theme in literature, and can even be considered a genre of its own. From accounts of specific events to intergenerational sagas, we can all think of a literary family whose story has touched us deeply. Sergi Belbel, Maria Canelles and Xavier Mas Craviotto have all told powerful family stories, at times reminding us that unfortunately, as the adage goes, “you can’t pick your family, but you can pick your friends,” but also showing us how often we’re glad to have family close by.
