For Ana María Matute (1925-2014), writing was ‘always a form of protest’, and perhaps this was the struggle she carried throughout her life, the one that made her one of the most brilliant Spanish writers of the twentieth century Author of short stories and novels, Matute skilfully combined realism and fantasy, genres that also reflected who she was as a person. An independent woman, shy but endearing and full of warmth, she always knew what she was facing and never doubted who she was. Matute was respected by her peers and deeply loved by her friends. One of them was the writer Carme Riera, who will join journalist and writer Álvaro Colomer to recall who Matute was: a master of language (which also led to her membership in the Real Academia Española) who raised her voice in protest and never fell silent.
