Despite his early, sudden death, Manuel Vázquez Montalbán (1939-2003) left behind a vast, wide-ranging literary oeuvre. He described himself as a “journalist, novelist, poet, essayist, anthologist, prologue writer, humourist, critic, gourmand, Barça supporter and generally prolific”, but even that is an understatement. In addition to being a key figure in Spanish crime fiction, the creator of the iconic detective Pepe Cravalho, he was a genuine author with a big personality, also known for his strong political engagement during the Franco dictatorship and the transition to democracy. His colleague and friend Eduardo Mendoza, and his son, the author Daniel Vázquez Sallés, will explore his role in our country’s history and literature.
