“Mala Hierba” in Gràcia, “5 Hermanos” in Nou Barris and “Bendita Helena” in Les Corts pick up the Barcelona Restaurant Trade awards

When

29/05/2018

The restaurants “Mala Hierba” (Gràcia), “5 Hermanos” (Nou Barris) and “Bendita Helena” (Les Corts) are the winners of the Barcelona Restaurant Trade Awards. The panel gave them the food quality, neighbourhood integration and famous or innovative premises awards, respectively.

Some thirty restaurants reached the final, establishments from the city’s 10 districts that stood out in 2017 for their strong neighbourhood links and values of integration, quality of life, innovation and adaptability to new times. The awards ceremony was held at the old Damm factory.

This was the first edition of an award created to highlight and recognise the work being done by many restaurateurs in the city, as well as acknowledge an activity that contributes to its growth, as the Councillor for Tourism, Commerce and Markets, Agustí Colom, pointed out. An activity involving quality food and the preparation of a healthy diet at affordable prices.

Prizes were also awarded for the efforts made in innovation and modernisation, in “reinventing themselves” as Agustí Colom pointed out, allowing the city to benefit from establishments that are developing and means “the city is also reinventing itself”. The restaurant sector in Barcelona boasts over 9,300 establishments and an annual turnover of €2.7 billion..

To ensure there was a representative selection of the diverse range of gastronomic offerings found throughout the city, each of the ten districts proposed three candidates, one for each of the awards, after consulting the local traders’ associations.

The panel members were Màxim López, general manager of the Barcelona Municipal Institute of Markets; Eva Ballarín, president of the Barcelona Restaurant Trade Guild; Nuria Pedro, secretary and spokesperson for the Mercat Vall d’Hebron Stallholders Committee; and Isabel Roig, general manager of the Barcelona Design Centre.
