Over 200 shops are taking part in the "Opera in Shops" programme, which includes 630 hours of recitals
Over 200 shops in various Barcelona shopping hubs will be offering opera recitals inside shops, from 4 May to 15 November. "Opera in Shops" is part of the Commerce and Culture Year programme, organised by Barcelona City Council and the Barcelona Commerce Foundation. The recitals are taking place in shops belonging to the Sagrada Família Shopping Hub.
The launching of this initiative aims to promote Barcelona's local commerce while also bringing opera to the attention of the general public. Nearly 1,890 performances are scheduled with various opera singers, who will be performing arias and Neapolitan songs. Each operatic piece is related to the commercial activity of the host shop.
Every Friday, from 5.30 to 8.30 pm, the shops of the selected shopping hub will host performances by opera singers. You will be able to hear a total of ten different songs in ten different establishments from the shopping hub chosen for each session. The performers will create an "operatic route" for shoppers to follow.
The performances will begin simultaneously in the chosen shops, and repeated every 15 minutes until 8.30 pm, making it possible for anyone who wants to hear all the songs to walk from shop to shop.
The Òpera Jove de Catalunya, made up of people involved in various areas of the operatic world, working to promote opera in Catalonia and to foster Catalan operatic talent, is collaborating with Òpera Jove de Catalunya the Barcelona Commerce Foundation.
The singers taking part in the "Opera in Shops" programme include the counter-tenor Sergio Monsalve, the mezzo-soprano Andrea Orjuela, the soprano Charo Tris, Fernando Álvarez and Toni Galera, alongside new voices and students from the Liceu Conservatory and ESMUC school, including the Colombian singer César Cortés, a Royal Artistic Circle Lyrical Award winner.
