Maker culture and digital manufacturing
Barcelona is recognised as a leader in the global maker movement.
Barcelona is recognised as a leader in the global maker movement, both thanks to the wide range of digital-manufacturing workshops and innovation spaces city residents are creating and thanks to a clear public commitment to these innovation and collaboration spaces through the Fab Labs Network, which offers educational programmes for families and operates under social-innovation criteria.
The maker movement, which emerged as a grassroots social movement led by associations and individuals, democratises technology and pursues concepts such as DIY ("do-it-yourself"), the collaborative economy, the circular economy, Kilometre Zero and open technology and democracy.
