La Casa Encendida launches a call to design and build the furniture for art book fair.

2 March, 2020 - 08:59 to 9 March, 2020 - 23:59

Madrid welcomes a new edition of the Libros Mutantes Art Book Fair, which will be held in the Patio on April 24th, 25th and 26th, 2020.

Eligibility

All authors of legal age from Spain or any other country are eligible to submit their proposals. Due to the costs derived from the transport of this type of projects, preference will be given to projects of creators based in Madrid who favor the so-called “short circuits” regarding the origin of the materials and the project execution.

Dates

Projects may be submitted between January 30th, 2020 and March 9th, 2020 at 12:00 noon (GMT + 1), both dates included.

Submissions sent before or after this period will not be accepted.

Prizes

A single prize of € 2,500 will be awarded.

This budget includes the production and all the expenses resulting from the acquisition of the required material and the rental of structures. It also includes the transport, building and installation of the furniture, and the design and execution fees of the project. Due to the costs derived from the transport of this type of projects, preference will be given to projects of creators based in Madrid who favor the so-called “short circuits” regarding the origin of the materials and the project execution.

The project will receive appropriate coverage in our communication and press strategies, both before and at the time of the event. Therefore, it is an excellent opportunity to make new designer’s proposals visible.

Requirements

All candidates must submit a dossier with the following information:

  • Short CV of the creator or the group.
  • Brief proposal summary.
  • Design and graphic proposal.
  • Space distribution based on the provided plans.
  • Description of the materials that will be used and the process of production and transport of the materials.
  • Justification of the adequacy of the project to the criteria of the call (sustainability, recycling, efficiency, “short circuits”, intelligent design).
  • Provisional budget distribution.
  • Availability and production calendar.
  • Design and development of 36 stands, which will be sharing the same space: the Central courtyard of La Casa Encendida (see attached map).
  • Each stand must have a horizontal exhibiting surface of approximately 150 x 75 cm (1,125 m2).
  • All stands will be complemented with supports that allow hanging or placing elements (posters, books, etc.) in an upright position.
  • Each stand must have 2 seats (stools or benches).
  • The stands or other shared elements must provide the publishers with storage space (boxes, backpacks, coats, etc.).
  • The furniture will have to allow the visitors to walk around the space easily and leaf through the different publications comfortably. Likewise, the proposals must consider accessibility for individuals with reduced mobility: the corridors must be at least 1.5 meters wide. As far as possible, the stands should be set in a circle and use the wall space.
  • The furniture should be easy to assemble and move around.
  • The project must include space for a stage (it is not necessary to design the stage, as it will be provided by La Casa Encendida) and an area for the audience.
  • The stage must have some element (table/lectern) that establishes an aesthetic continuity with the patio space.
  • The inclusion of elements in an additional space, on the second floor, will be valued. There already is some furniture there (chairs and tables) but it must be equipped with decorative elements that establish an aesthetic continuity with the patio space. This room measures 238 m2 and will house another 36 stands.
  • The following criteria will be valued:
    • Sustainability.

    • Recycling or reuse of materials.

    • Do it Yourself.

    • Manual procedures.

    • Smart design.

    • The origin of the materials.

  • The selected creators will be responsible for the design, production, transport, assembly and disassembly of the furniture in La Casa Encendida.
  • Once the fair is over, the produced pieces will become property of the owners of the winning project. This entitles them to their use for any end they deem appropriate. Possible reuse of the pieces to extend their life cycle will be valued.

Jury

Submissions will be assessed by a jury made up of representatives from Libros Mutantes and La Casa Encendida and will have to be approved by the environmental department of La Casa Encendida.

Libros Mutantes and La Casa Encendida reserve the right to declare the prize null and void.

Publication

By participating in this call, the award recipients automatically consent to the use, publication and reproduction, worldwide and without limitation, of their image and name in any type of advertising, promotion, publication (including the Internet) or any other means, for commercial or informative purposes, provided that these relate only to this call, without expecting Libros Mutantes to pay any financial compensation for it.
