Characteristics
The aim of this call is to produce an original work of street art on the inner wall of the Spanish Embassy courtyard (19 rue de la Science, 1000 Brussels).
The work must cover the whole wall. The techniques used to create the work may be any which are normally used for street art provided that they are appropriate for the pictorial medium (concrete), environmentally friendly, comply with safety standards and guarantee its durability. The work should be designed by the artist(s) to last for a minimum of 5 years.
The theme of the call is "WE ARE NATURE: A wall against climate change". The submitted projects shall be linked to nature and the fight against global warming.
The project can be multidisciplinary (sculpture, plants, etc.).
Funding and Benefits
The City of Brussels and the Spanish Embassy will pay a fixed sum of €12,000 (inc. tax) for the project. This amount includes the artist’s expenses (materials, travel, accommodation, etc.), fees and transfer of rights on the work and its reproduction, within the limits established by the law.

The City of Brussels will provide the artist(s) with the necessary equipment, such as scaffolding or a ladder.
Selection
The winning project will be selected by the City of Brussels and the Embassy. A jury shall be specially appointed for this purpose.
The jury will consist of:
- A representative from the Office of the Alderwoman of Culture of the City of Brussels
- Two PARCOURS Street Art representatives
- Two Embassy representatives
- A journalist
- A professional in the sector
Selection Criteria
- General concept and intentions of the project
- Aesthetic quality
- Suitability of the work to the architecture and the urban environment
- Technical feasibility of the creation and preservation of the work
- Priority will be given to collective and multicultural projects
The City of Brussels and the Spanish Embassy representatives reserve the right not to choose any project.
Calendar
Application deadline: The application must be submitted no later than midnight on May 31 2020.
Decision: The final selection will be made no later than 15 June 2020 (to be confirmed due to COVID 19).
The execution of the fresco will take place in the course of 2020 but the precise date is not yet available due to the current circumstances. A decision shall be taken in accordance with the changing health situation.
Project Submission
The application must be submitted by email to streetart@brucity.be preferably as a single .pdf format file of a maximum of 5MB. If the application exceeds 5MB, it must be sent via wetransfer.com.
Please limit your application to eight pages. An electronic receipt will be sent to confirm the registration of each project submitted.
The application must include:
- The contact details of the candidate(s) (first name, surname, date of birth, address, telephone number, email address of the artist or person authorised to act on behalf of the collective)
- A presentation of the artist and/or collective (biography, CV, images of previous work etc.)
- One or more document(s) enabling the viewing of the project: a sketch or virtual representation which is as accurate as possible and includes colours and materials
- An explanation of the approach behind the project
- A technical data sheet listing the materials to be used (please ensure they comply with environmental standards)
- An estimation of the time required to complete the project
