Improvement of Barcelona’s beaches and restoration of the Forum bathing area
As part of the strategy for geographical diversification of the tourism offer, this is the key project. The initiative, carried out by Barcelona Cicle de l’Aigua and part of the coastal action plan in the PSTD, proposes a series of interventions on the city’s beaches and the Fòrum bathing area. The aim is to create a safer, more accessible, naturalised space that is adapted to climate change, while also offering a range of tourism services and products with a cross-cutting and inclusive approach.
This beach improvement project includes several actions to make them more accessible, sustainable and appealing:
- Renaturalisation of the beaches: coastal vegetation will be increased, protecting biodiversity with native species, and signage will be installed explaining the natural value of the area. Environmental and marine activities will also be promoted at the Fòrum.
- Improved safety: the protection of the breakwaters will be strengthened with improved fencing and signage.
- Improved accessibility: autonomous access points and services will be built to accommodate people with functional diversity.
- More services: the offer will be enhanced with loungers, wooden walkways, shaded areas, playgrounds and energy-efficient elements.
- Revitalisation of the Fòrum bathing area (ZBF): infrastructure will be created to promote water sports, educational programmes and walking routes focused on climate change. This area, with low footfall, has the potential to become a peaceful space with high social and environmental value. It also offers synergies with nearby tourist areas and can serve as a model of resilience against climate change.
These improvements aim to create a more inclusive, green and climate-conscious environment.
