La Boqueria monitors visitor traffic at the market to improve its operations

The installation of 78 smart sensors at the main intersections of La Boqueria will provide insights on visitor habits at the market, what they are looking for and how long they are there. This initiative has received support from the Barcelona Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan.

La Boqueria market has taken a step forwards in its digital transformation with the installation of sensors that will allow for real-time analysis of visitor traffic and movements at the site.

This information is essential to anticipate overcrowding, strengthen security and optimise internal mobility in the market. It will also make it possible to better plan resources and services during peak hours and popular tourist periods, with a view to improving the experience of both residents and visitors.

Digitalisation will also be a useful tool for stallholders, who will be able to better understand their customers’ patterns and adapt their products to the real needs of the public. The data generated will contribute to more efficient decision-making that is better aligned with the daily operations of the market.

An additional improvement in urban sustainability

The initiative forms part of the Boqueria Digital project, developed with technology solutions company TC Group Solutions, with support from the Barcelona Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan (PSTDB). This plan, led by the Department for Tourism at Barcelona City Council, is funded through the European Union Next Generation scheme.

This action reinforces La Boquerias continued commitment to being a market at the forefront of innovation, without losing its traditional essence or its status as a commercial, cultural and tourist landmark. The initiative is also aligned with the objectives of the PSTDB, which encourages initiatives that improve the management of high-traffic spaces, advance digitalisation and promote a more responsible and balanced tourism model.
