Project COMPASS: Transforming the tourism sector towards circularity

Compass is an initiative led by Barcelona City Council, the Tourism Consortium, and the Chair of Circular Economy and Sustainability at Tecnocampus, designed to promote the circular economy in the tourism sector.

The aim of the project is to transform business practices and contribute to the sustainability, circularity and resilience of the city. It brings together companies interested in collaboration and innovation to address the challenges of circularity.

The participation of the business fabric in the COMPASS project demonstrates a growing awareness and environmental commitment within the sector. The goal has been to create a common meeting space for committed stakeholders and to launch the first collective business initiatives on circularity in the tourism sector.

The result has been the development of three collaborative projects between the companies:

  1. Committed 4 Food: This focuses on reducing food waste through circular practices in the hospitality sector. The mission is to promote responsible and sustainable consumption, while the objectives include developing a food waste prevention plan and addressing other issues related to food culture.
  2. Barcelona Circular: The aim is to facilitate collaboration between tourism companies and circular suppliers through the creation of a data platform and a second-hand marketplace.   The goals include obtaining 100 commitments from sustainable supplier companies and a 20% increase in circular operations.
  3. Circular Friendly: The idea is to make Barcelona a benchmark in sustainable tourism by establishing an information platform for tourists with tourism agents linked to the circular economy. The objectives include informing tourists about sustainable options and driving responsible tourism through promotions and awareness campaigns.

Project COMPASS has not only served as a collaboration platform but has also contributed to the creation of a more circular, collaborative and responsible business ecosystem in Barcelona’s tourism sector.
It will continue throughout 2025.
