Tourism and Cities Cycle at the CCCB
Barcelona City Council, Barcelona Provincial Council and the CCCB aim to collaborate with the goal of promoting a series of activities focused on tourism and the cities at the Barcelona Centre for Contemporary Culture, between 2024 and 2027.
The growth of tourism has become one of the key factors influencing contemporary urban dynamics. Barcelona is now a globally recognised destination. In this context, it is essential that Barcelona is able to address both local and global challenges, ensuring that all social and economic sectors contribute towards this goal.
The impact of tourism goes far beyond economic aspects, as it affects the transformation of urban spaces, mobility practices, the commercial fabric and the daily life of residents.
This ability to influence the very configuration and identity of cities has brought to the forefront and intensified the debate about the benefits and externalities of tourism. The debate focuses on the image that the city wants to present, the social return of tourism, the sustainability of the sector, the guaranteed well-being of residents, the quality of the tourist experience, urban balance, economic development and its contribution to reducing inequalities.
The continuous rise in visitors has highlighted challenges such as regulating tourist accommodation, taxation within the tourism industry and managing drought conditions. An integrated approach is therefore needed to seize new opportunities and address the challenges it presents, bearing in mind that it is a socio-economic sector subject to constant evolution, which makes its management more complex.
