Montjuïc Castle presents the exhibition "Barcelona 1992, thirty years on" on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Barcelona Olympic Games, a key event for the transformation of Montjuïc mountain and Barcelona as a whole, which placed the city on the world map.
The exhibition, curated by Sergi Picazo, is located in rooms 18 and 19 of the Castle. It offers a historical journey from the early 1980s, when the bid was launched, to the celebration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and provides a space for reflection on the Olympic legacy, thirty years on, through the eyes of subsequent generations.
The Games were intended as a catalyst for the transformation of the city and Montjuïc mountain, which was to be their focal point. As Barcelona began to take its first steps under democracy, it had a great lack of urban development and facilities and, until then, despite being a historic Mediterranean port city, it lived with its back to the sea.
When Barcelona was designated as the host city for the Games in 1986, work began on changing the urban layout of the city, and on the construction and modernisation of sports facilities and major improvements in the areas of mobility, transport and sanitation, which led to a major transformation of the city.
