Montjuïc Castle hosted the exhibition Catalunya es fa forta (Catalonia fortifies itself) from 23 December 2014 to 31 March 2015. The exhibition took visitors on a tour of the main fortresses in modern Catalonia. It explained the types of bastions and the reason for the pentagonal and triangular shapes of the fortifications. The purpose of the exhibition was to acquaint visitors with the architectural engineering of the castles and give them the sensation of being within the walls of a fortress during the visit.
Since the first contacts between different peoples, men have attacked each other to defend and expand their territories, to guarantee their safety and ensure basic needs and progress.
The exhibition examined the different types of construction that man has created over the years in the face of the threat of attack, from the first Iberian settlements up to the twentieth century, and explained why so many fortifications and so many different types have existed in Catalonia.
The bastion forts of modern times, Montjuïc Castle and the Castle of Sant Ferran de Figueres, took the centre stage in this exhibition.
