Gestures Out-of-Place

From 22th January, the Castle of Montjuïc will host the exhibition "Gestures out of place" in a co-production with La Escocesa, a prominent creation factory, public centre for artistic residencies and contemporary art production space.

The exhibition is a movement of translation between spaces, an attempt to transfer certain processes and dynamics that operate and make up La Escocesa to the Castle of Montjuïc. A partial coupling of gestures and actions that also talks about the discomfort of this displacement.

The utopia of coexistence in a creative space becomes a political project when certain inertias are tense that oscillate between the individual and the collective, the public and the private, what is mine and what is yours, chaos and order, the one who is inside and the one who is outside. However, when it comes to explaining the plot that sustains community life, we often find that the discourses have become worn out and the words have exhausted their meaning. It is then that the subtleties of the gestures are revealed towards a displacement that makes them radical.

In the exhibition you can see the works “Zona en construcció: zona en destrucció”, by Juan Antonio Cerezuela, which explains the resistance of Poblenou against the advance of gentrification and real estate speculation; the proposal “Tòtem”, by the Radial Radiant collective, which tells the story of a mysterious artifact that has always been very present in the collective imagination and spirit of La Escocesa; the work “La cinquena pota de la taula”, where Sonia Villar and Natalia Castañeda invite us to reflect on the passage of time, connecting with the Mesa program, a set design created with elements from La Escocesa to explore the ritual of shared food as an artistic medium; the proposal "Una ploma, runes i quelcom més", by Michael Lawton, where 53 paintings will be moved to the castle barracks, narrating poetic moments through abstraction and finally, "Com una gelosia", by Rosa Lendínez, an sculptural installation, created from wooden pieces that symbolize people, key moments and milestones, with the collaboration of Juan Antonio Cerezuela, an expert artist in the field.

The names that make up this exhibition share the same space, a daily life crossed by multiple affections, affinities and desires. But they also have the will to build an associative project that is more than the sum of its parts, with a horizontal structure and support networks. In this context, practices, rather than discourses, are world creators.

The exhibition, which can be seen in the Castle until 24th March, will open next 22th January  at 12p.m.
