Montjuïc Castle presents the exhibition “Urban nature. The fauna of Montjuïc mountain”, which invites you to discover the natural habitats of Montjuïc mountain and the animal species that inhabit this area, one of the main green lungs of the city of Barcelona.
This exhibition, with its educational focus, contributes to the awareness of the ecological value of this leisure spot, popular with the city’s residents for taking a walk, playing sport or enjoying sporting and cultural events. At the same time, the exhibition shows visitors the impact that these human activities and the massive influx of people have on this environment and that can compromise the living conditions and peace that many species need. It also aims to raise the visitor’s awareness of the need to respect the natural environment and conserve natural surroundings such as Montjuïc mountain.
The exhibition is structured in three sections that take us through three natural habitats of Montjuïc and the animal species found there: the green areas, made up of woodland, parks and gardens, the buildings and cliffs, and the water areas including the fountains and ponds. The exhibition also has a central space that provides data and information to awaken the visitor’s curiosity.
Getting to know the habitats of Montjuïc means gaining an insight into the evolution this space has undergone over the years, from its rural transformation to the organisation of the mountain in preparation for the 1929 International Exposition and the 1992 Olympics, the works on the port of Barcelona and the building of the amusement parks, among other interventions.
