Gabi Martínez
A writer, screenwriter and journalist, Gabi Martínez is considered to have breathed new life into the travel literature and nature writing genres in Spain. His notable travel works include Los mares de Wang [The Seas of Wang] (Alfaguara, 2008), recognised by Condé Nast Traveller in its Best Non-Fiction category, and Sudd (Alfaguara, 2007), adapted into a graphic novel by Glénat.
Beyond travel literature, he is also known for Ático [Top Floor] (Destino, 2004), which led the Palgrave/MacMillan publishing house to select him as one of the top five most representative Spanish avant-garde authors of the past twenty years; Sólo para gigantes [Only for Giants] (Alfaguara, 2011), which won Spanish public broadcaster TVE’s Continuará award in 2012 and was chosen as the best Spanish-language non-fiction book by Qué Leer magazine; and Las defensas [The Defences] (Seix Barral, 2017). He is also one of the driving forces behind Liternatura, a festival that encourages participants to rethink the relationship between humans, creation and nature. His perspective on our relationship with nature comes through in works such as Un cambio de verdad [A True Change] (Seix Barral, 2020), about the radical experience of a rural life that refuses to be obliterated by urban sprawl, and the illustrated book Animales invisibles. Mito, vida y extinción [Invisible Animals. Myth, Life and Extinction] (Nórdica Libros – Capitán Swing, 2021), a collaboration with Jordi Serrallonga in which he explores how wildlife continues to shape the imagination and lives of humans around the world through the pursuit of mysterious or legendary animals that are presumably extinct or practically impossible to find.
