In recent decades, a new shift has taken place in how we understand the human species. We have learned ever more about other living beings: their forms of intelligence, communication and ways of life, as well as the deep interdependence that binds us together. In light of this knowledge, we can no longer place humanity at the top of a supposed evolutionary hierarchy. Instead, we must relearn a truth that has always been present but was dismissed by Western modernity: that we are part of a planetary whole in which the human cannot be separated from the non-human.
